Camp Schodack is a traditional children’s sleep away camp located in New York, just outside the Capital Region. We have been operating as a summer camp since we first opened our doors in 1957 and have been proudly creating amazing summers for thousands of children ever since. Schodack has been under the same continuous family ownership for 4 generations, and the Krouner family are committed to making sure that every camper has the best possible experience. For over 60 years, our motto has been ‘Warmth, Tradition, Spirit’ – words that stand at the core of everything we do.
Everything that happens at Schodack is focused on a deep sense of community, positive child development, active participation, fun and an appreciation for the outdoors.
Located on an idyllic property just outside the Berkshires, Camp Schodack is easily accessible for both Boston and Manhattan and is approximately a 2.5 hour drive from both cities. Our location, being set so close to both the Berkshires and the Adirondacks really provides a wonderful backdrop for all sorts of adventures. In addition to our full program on site, we offer fantastic trips over the course of the summer to a number of cultural, athletic and outdoor/adventure venues. We offer trips to the ballet in Albany, the opera at SPAC, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, the Norman Rockwell Museum and performances at Tanglewood. We also visit State Parks for overnight trips and day excursions, white water rafting, indoor caving, and rock climbing with our highly trained adventure team. Our oldest campers get to enjoy a trip to Canada each year and one of the most popular trips to be sent out each summer is the All-Camp trip to ‘Six Flags – New England’ that takes place right at the end of the summer. We really are located right in heart of everything you could want.
The Krouner family values continuity among our staff and that focus creates a family-like atmosphere at Schodack. Our Assistant Directors and Head Staff have either grown up at Schodack themselves or have been there in leadership roles for many, many years. We also have an incredible, and totally unique, percentage of former campers on our staff staff. More than 90% of our bunk staff that work directly in the bunks with our campers, have all grown up at Schodack themselves. This means that our staff are perfectly prepared to share our history and traditions with the next generation of Schodack campers. It also means they know what it was like to be a Schodack camper and can provide the warm, nurturing support we are known for. Our experienced leadership team and dedicated bunk staff make sure that every child’s experience is meaningful. Camp is about fun – playing sports, trying new adventures, dressing up in a silly costume for a skit night. But it also about growing and develop independence in ways that children can’t experience anywhere else. We are also proud of our high staff to camper ratio (almost 2:1) which ensures that all of our campers have what they need at all times.
Our property consists of 40 acres of spacious, manicured lawns and another 60 acres of private woodlands, used for hiking paths, horseback riding and trails to explore. In addition to all of our traditional summer camp activities we have a number of both indoor and outdoor facilities big enough to accommodate the whole camp for any number of occasions. These include our PlayHouse, Amphitheater, Outdoor Hollow, Rec Hall and the Garden (Fieldhouse). Each space has its special place in our campers hearts due to the variety of events held at each one over the summers. Our cabins are all recently renovated and are open and spacious with en-suite bathroom and shower facilities. All living spaces also have large fan systems to keep them cool during the day and warm in the evenings. Additionally, all of our bunks come with outdoor porches which campers love to hang out on and play games. Our Dining Hall caters to all dietary restrictions at each meal and we enjoy being a smaller camp that can eat all our meals together as a community.
