Our Latest Video

August means a lot of things here in the 12123. For one, it means that the final day of camp is getting closer. Fall seems to be right on queue, with some leaves already growing amber and floating to the ground. School, winter, and 10 months of life outside of the warmth of camp await us; however, August brings a lot of excitement as well!
For one, Bunk Plaque Night. The final leg of our Triple Crown events. This year’s BPN was a true testament to how much creativity and verve can be found throughout our campgrounds. The plaques were beautiful, each bunk looked stellar in their coordinating outfits and synced movements, and two bunks in particular left the stage that night with a crown atop their heads. First, the Cherry Girls! Their song Cherry On Top secured them the first Triple Crown win for Junior Camp since. Ending the show were the CITs, their name ‘CIT Classic’ matched the lyrics, emotion, and choreography that accompanied their monochromatic plaque. It was a classic indeed, with both bunks earning their permanent spots in Schodack history. Even now, with BPN behind us, the tunes of the day are still echoing around camp. That’s not the only thing echoing…
Our LT show was an evening full of music, dance, and skits that many campers anticipate all summer. In a sweet closing number, the second year LTs passed the metaphorical torch down onto the newcomers and left the stage together– singing. As the lights of the Playhouse flickered on, our attention snapped to the back of the room, where two staff members appeared with arrows in tow and scrolls thatched to them.
We hurried over to the climbing tower where a shadowy figure wrestled to attempt and stop Tribals from breaking. Through the power of joy, our villain was defeated and we headed into the Garden for the Tribals break. The room was illuminated with glow sticks as our Spec took to the from of the crowd with an arrow high overhead. With the help of Warmth, Tradition, and Spirit, Tribals officially broke– launching us into five full days of excitement.
Our teams, White Echo and Green Icons are currently going toe-to-toe to see who will come out victorious. With days full of activities and special events such as Hatchet Hunt, The Marathon, and Medleys framing our days. There’ve been fireworks at night, dance battles in the Rec Hall, and spirited matches of Steal The Bacon.
The return of thrilling activities like the Marathons, laser tag, and the Medleys have been highlights of the week. Campers have been inviting staff to join them for the annual Carter’s Challenge– an iron camper race through every activity.

Middle Girls

Another stellar week for the Middle Girls!
On Saturday we had the last leg of Triple Crown, Bunk Plaque Night.
The Tulip’s took over, Sassafras made their statement, we were all Stuck on Yew and Loved by Larch. Their performances brought smiles to our faces and tears to our eyes.

On Sunday we decided to treat ourselves to a little self-care. In the morning we chilled out with facemasks, skincare, manicures, bracelet making, spa water and freshly cut fruit. In the afternoon we centered ourselves with a yoga class led by camp’s personal yoga master Olly Carter. We came out feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

For our final trip day we hopped on some roller coasters and had a whirl of a time at Six Flags.

On Tuesday we settled down for a night of entertainment by the LTs, when BOOM, the SPEC, Ben Perle broke Tribals by heroically saving all the core memories of camp. The teams were decided, led by two of the Middle Girls GLs, we are so proud of you.<3

We are excited for 5 full days of camp spirit!

We are looking forward to having a fun-filled last week!

Middle Boys

Hey folks!

This is a happy and sad blurb. Happy, because we had an awesome week, but sad because it’s the last blurb 🙁 But let’s jump into it:

We started off the week with a twist on LT’s challenge day as the Middle Boys participated in: Difficult Hours! We came up with a series of challenges for the boys to complete as teams and win the chance for a custom Difficult Hours T-shirt. The boys split into 4 teams: Orange, Yellow, Rainbow, and Brown.

They started off the day with competitive cleaning (parents let me tell you, you might want to give this one a try!) where the bunk was split into 4 quadrants and whoever cleaned the best won.

Next, we moved to Siberia where we played Capture the Flag…  with water balloons. The staff and I filled up 500+ water balloons for the boys to use to defend their flags. They played until every flag was stolen.

When the rain began to pour down, we had to shift gears and do story-telling in the bunk. The boys had 10 minutes to come up with a story, then they presented it to the counselors.

The rain couldn’t stop us as we moved into a handball tournament in the garden. We had two courts set up and the boys battled it out. The winners played each other and the losers played each other for a 1st-4th place!

So much running around worked up an appetite so we went to lunch but it wasn’t a normal lunch. It was a silent lunch, and old tribals tradition! The boys ate their chicken tenders and fries in silence, containing their laughter and hand-signaling to each other.

It was definitely an action-packed morning, so we were so thankful for rest hour to come! The boys had done well all morning so to introduce our Christmas themed-afternoon “Santa” (Me in a paper beard) came around in a gold cart with antlers and a red nose to drop off stocking filled with candy for the boys to enjoy.

The afternoon finished with a reindeer rope pull and a huge Chritsmas themed scavenger hunt. The Brown team ended up taking the win, but all the boys had such a great time!

It’s been a great summer, thanks for reading!

Senior Girls

This week at camp has been full of excitement, and the Senior Girls have been right in the middle of it all! Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to:

We started the week with a fun Senior Division Day that had an Olympic theme. The Senior Division represented the countries of the USA, UK, France, Italy, Mexico, and Australia. They created colorful flags, came up with their own national anthems, and even built an Eiffel Tower! Even though we had a bit of rain, we all gathered in the rec hall for a lively game of Family Feud to end the afternoon.

Saturday evening was a special highlight with the return of BPN. The Senior Girls put on fantastic performances, earning well-deserved praise and designed some amazing plaques. “Senior One Comeback”, “Senior Two Be Continued”, “Proud to Be Senior 3” and “Senior 4 Now” will stay in all of our memories for a long time. A special shoutout must go to “Senior One Comeback” for coming third!

On Monday, we began a new week at Schodack, making the most of our regular activities for the summer. For Trip Day, the girls got to choose between thrilling rides and waterparks at Six Flags or a day of eating great food and shopping in Saratoga. Back at camp, they could either watch an Ultra Leagues game or enjoy a movie.

Tribals broke after an amazing LT show, and the excitement was high! Wednesday started with a relaxed wake-up and an action-packed day. Our first activity period was an intense game of Handball and Steal the Bacon, before heading down for the highly anticipated  Hatchet Hunt. The Senior Girls also got the chance to enjoy some time at the lake, trying out kneeboarding, wakeboarding, and banana boating.

As we head into the final week, we’re looking forward to more fun and making the most of our last days together. Here’s to a great end to Summer 2024!

Senior Boys

The Senior Boys are nearing the end of their summers but the fun is FAR from over.

This week included not one but TWO exciting off-camp trips. The senior boys had the option of going on a trip to Six Flags or Saratoga. The boys at Six Flags got to be thrill seekers going on the wildest roller coasters on the East Coast. On the other hand, the boys in Saratoga got to relax. The boys enjoyed all-you-can-eat sushi and a Schodack favorite with the sandwiches at Putnam Market.

This was followed up with an incredibly exciting day on camp. The boys enjoyed watching LT show featuring some incredibly funny skits as well as some incredible music acts.

Following LT show we heard some very familiar firecrackers. We followed the story of “Inside Out” with a Schodack twist. We saw Bing Bong get pushed off the climbing tower by “the darkness” but the emotions takedown which was trying to suck the fun out All of this ended with an arrow breaking and you know what that means: it’s Tribals time.

We’ve also had an exciting time in Ultra Leagues! The Orange team became champions of basketball and soccer ending in a TIE between Orange and Purple. Orange and Purple will play again soon and we will find out if Orange can capture both championships.

LTs

The LTs enjoyed an action-packed trip to Montreal – easily the highlight is the Jet Boating on the Lachine Rapids – this really is something that you simply MUST do if you are ever in Montreal in late summer. Incroyable!!! After getting back to camp on Thursday, we were straight back into our roles of serving at mealtimes and looking after the entire camp in the evening as the staff enjoyed a night off. Bunk Plaque Night was amazing. I believe the Waiter Song was the best Waiter song I have heard in over twenty years (I’ll still put 1992 Revival first since it changed the whole concept of BPN – but there hasn’t been anything better than this…and yet it didn’t even win. The CITs were spectacular as well and lifted the Triple Crown* . Most impressive was how both groups handled Kipling’s twin imposters. I really was super proud of both groups, and it bodes well if we have these teenagers as role models heading into the future.

Yesterday was the final trip day of the summer and the First Years thoroughly enjoyed their day in Saratoga while the second years were helping the younger campers at 6 Flags in Lake George. These words are being written just prior to the start of LT Show Day, when hopefully we will live up to the incredibly high standard that previous groups have put on. We are incredibly lucky to be able to present Linda Krouner playing The Moonlight Sonata – and all the LTs are looking forward to seeing that before putting on the varied acts that make up The Show. After that we will be enjoying all the great occasions that make the ending of a camp summer, notably the LT Banquet at local restaurant Moscatiello’s where we celebrate the year and look back on the journey we have taken together. This is a special group and they have been great fun to be around!

More From The Week

Broadway Beat was our second musical act of the season. A revue of songs and musicals that shaped Broadway. An onstage crew manned the show before the audience’s eyes while the cast dance and sang through some of our favorite songs. The opening number proved to ring true, because we haven’t been able to ‘stop the beat’ that’s been ringing in our hearts ever since viewing the production.
Our final trip day was to Six Flags. Campers spent the day riding roller coasters or playing games alongside their bunk staff and permanent LTs. Over in Saratoga, some of Upper Camp enjoyed a day of relaxing , eating ice cream and sightseeing. Adventure also had their final trip of the season this week, an overnight in Vermont. On more evenings of portable tacos, s’mores, and misty morning tent wake ups.
We’ve had a string of crisp mornings and perfectly sunny afternoons, making it the perfect weather for Tribals activities. Over at Arts and Crafts, our painting team has been hard at work on the plaques for both teams. Chefs Alex and Hectar have been offering a new Camper Choice exclusive treat– baked Alaska! The Middle and Junior Girls both enjoyed spa days– updating their manicures, getting their hair braided, and decorating face masks!
We surprised Doug Herbst, our Programe Coordinator, when tribals firecrackers sounded for something he was not in the loop on. Over at the Welcome Center, behind a tarp was a gift to Doug to commentate his 30th year at Camp Schodack! A giant chair to match the even bigger role Herbst has played at camp throughout his three decades here!
The camp energy has been on an overall high. It’s hard to believe that in a few short days, the quad frogs will be released back into the wild, the final friendship bracelets of the season will be strung, and we’ll gather in the Playhouse to sing Friends for a final time. Summer 2024 has been like no other. Thank you for coming back each week for updates on all of the fun we’ve had this season.
