Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Schodack located?

We are in Nassau, NY, in a beautiful, verdant and wooded area just 12 miles from Albany, NY. We are easily accessible by plane, bus and train to Albany. Just 2.5 hours north of New York City and 2.5 hours west of Boston, we are in a picturesque area just outside the Berkshires.

Where do counselors come from?

While many of our staff grew up right here at Schodack as campers, we hire staff from many areas of the United States, Canada, Australia, the UK and other countries in Europe.

Will I go through a training program?

Yes! All staff come to camp for a comprehensive staff training and orientation before the campers arrive. The length of orientation depends upon the staff position, but you will experience a 10-day, pre-camp orientation as a minimum. During this time you will learn important skills about how to be a successful counselor and bond with your fellow staff. You will also spend lots of time with your supervisors who continue to provide you with support and guidance throughout the rest of the summer.

Who will be hiring me?

Our Assistant Director, Owen Pennant Jones, does most of our staff hiring throughout the winter. Owen began at Schodack in 1985 when he joined the staff as a soccer counselor from England and now works for camp year-round. Feel free to contact him directly at [email protected] with any questions.

What will my housing be like?

Bunk Counselors and Group Leaders live in the cabins with the campers. The cabins are comfortable buildings with bathrooms and showers. Activity Staff may live in the cabins as well, but are more likely to live in separate housing, including private or semi-private rooms, dorms or large staff-only cabins.

Do I need to bring bedding?

US and Canadian staff need to bring your own towels, blankets, pillows and linens. We provide all bedding and linens at no charge for international staff.

What are the facilities like at Schodack?

How is the camp program structured?

How much time will I get off?

You will have one period off each day. This time can be used to relax or partake in many of the fun activities we offer at camp. There are restaurants, a movie theater and convenient stores near camp that are open during the hours you are off in the evening. We also provide a fun and engaging staff recreation program that offers additional activities during your free time. We are happy to offer transportation to these activities several times during the week.

You will also have a day off each week that extends for approximately 30 hours.

Schodack has a zero-tolerance drug and underage drinking policy that is strictly and consistently enforced. We are also a completely non-smoking community.

Will I have access to a computer?

We have a comfortable staff lounge with many computers, all connected to the internet, where staff can hang out during their time off and communicate with home. The staff lounge also has individual lockboxes, satellite TV, beverage machines and a pool table.

Is there a curfew?

Yes, all counselors must be signed-in and back in their living areas by 1:00am.

What is the weather like at camp?

During the day, the weather is warm and mild, usually 70°-90°F. We encourage you to bring a warm sweatshirt or jacket for the cooler evenings, especially in August, and a raincoat for the occasional rainy day.

What can I expect from the summer?

The time of your life…meeting great children……making new and lasting friendships……learning and teaching life lessons……a summer you will never forget……
