Newsletter 3: Summer 2024

Our Latest Video

We’re another week into summer 2024 and things just keep getting better in the 12123! Over the weekend, our LTs put on their second event of the summer– the legendary LT Carnival! Booths galore, dunk tanks, caricatures and all of our favorite carnival treats were back. Cotton candy, snow cones, a highly customizable cookie decorating station and strawberries and cream were available for all to indulge in. Between snack stops, campers got to take a slip down an inflatable waterslide, get messy with a group of nefarious mimes, or have their faces painted. The afternoon set the tone and excitement for the events to come on Sunday. An afternoon all have been anticipating from the very first night of camp: Talent Show!

The first of three legs in our Triple Crown series is now past. A day of skits, dances, and laughs. For Talent Show, entire bunks took the stage to show off their acting chops, choreography skills, and showcase their extraordinary talents. Bunks parodied popular media with a Camp Schodack twist. Some skits featured live singing, ukulele playing, or dazzling acrobatics. Already, whispers of music have been floating around the hills of camp– Lip Sync is next and the excitement for it is incredible.

That’s not the only music we’ve been hearing. Every Camper Choice, the cast and crew for Wonka JR have been meeting up to prepare for the upcoming production. Lollypops made out of pool noodles and chocolate bars constructed from cardboard and paper are being strung up in the Playhouse. Also on the Playhouse stage: Kemp Harris returned for another evening of enchanting stories. This followed our annual Wettest Day Ever (more of that later,) and was a perfect wind down from such an energy packed day. We’ve had a blast this week. The thought of what’s to come just has us shivering in our timbers…

2-Day Tribals has been a big topic of discussion around camp recently. Our surprise visits from Captain Jack Sparrow and his band of pirate friends has only contributed to the growing suspicion that 2-Day may be breaking very soon. We had our first tribals fake on Friday evening. An all too familiar firecracker sound had us running for the Rec Hall steps. Through rhyming verses, the theme for 2-Day this year was alluded. It was confirmed once our favorite pirate appeared on the roof of the HC after middle camp talent show. Since then, sea chanties and talk of golden doubloons have been whispered across camp. Will Two Day break soon?

Senior Girls

What a week it has been for Senior Girls!

All bunks had an amazing time at Talent Show, with the Senior 1 girls performing a ‘Rihanna Mashup’. Senior 2 girls danced to the ‘Name Game’.  Senior 3 told the story of the ‘Lost Office of Camp Schodack’ and Senior 4 performed ‘Toy Story’. We were all so happy when Senior 4 Girls came 3rd place!
Away from Talent Show, the Senior Girls had a chance to sign up and have a go at high ropes, which was enjoyed by many. A welcomed blister day saw the division chill in the pool area to cool off from a week of hot weather, and we enjoyed music and smores at an upper camp bonfire for night activity.
Trip day saw us load the buses to the bowling alley, where we all had a best shot at getting a strike, before going to the movie theater, choosing to watch either Despicable Me 4, A Quiet Place or Inside Out 2.
It’s been such a fun week for Senior Girls and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for us next week!

Senior Boys

Another exciting week for the Senior Boys! Daily activities, trip days, and special events have made these first two weeks exceptional!

We had exciting night activities like a senior camp bonfire decked out with s’mores as well as a fun game of “make me laugh.” We’ve also been getting excited for 2-day tribals as we see fakes featuring pirates on the look for a buried treasure.

The Senior Boys also had a great time off camp this week! We went bowling and enjoyed one of Despicable Me 4, Inside Out 2, and A Quiet Place. We also went on a variety of intercamps including a second-place finish from Olly Nova and Eli Diamant in a doubles tennis tournament.

We’ve had an incredibly fun and eventful week, and your boys have been absolute stars.

They’re creating memories, forming friendships, and thoroughly enjoying themselves. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the summer has in store!

LTs

The LTs have enjoyed an incredibly busy week and, at time of writing, are enjoying spending time in that grandest of towns, Saratoga. Since last time, dear reader, the LTs planned, prepared and spent a day with the campers from (local day camp) Hope 7 – treating our guests to a dance party, slip and slide, Go Kart rides, relay races, a tennis academy, the Ninja Warrior course, arts and crafts and a splash in the pool. Meaningful relationships were struck between the LTs and the visiting campers and we look forward to their return in about three weeks! The very next day, the LTs were entirely responsible for the set-up, execution and then clean-up of the first Carnival. LTs ran all the booths as the entire camp enjoyed themselves for two hours on a highly successful Rookie Day.

Wimblesquare (that’s 4- Square on grass to the uninitiated) followed by strawberries and cream was a big hit. We will be reprising this – with the addition of Horse Racing – at the second Carnival at the end of the month. And then somehow – having had that plus a full day of LTing on Thursday – the LTs combined to go 1-2 in Talent Show. The Waiters were excellent with their rendition of Ricky Stanicky, but the CITs took the night with the Wizard of Oz – truly one of the most exceptional performances in the storied history of Talent Show.

With no time to breathe the LTs then had their second Challenge Day – Game Shows Day – on Monday – a close contest between the four teams (alphabetically) Blue, Grink, Red, and Yellow – as the battle for the coveted winners’ t-shirts heats up! Tuesday as usual was trip day and this saw us at Bowling and the Movies – although some of the second years were with younger campers at Howe Caverns. Whew! Wednesday at ‘the Spa’ was well earned before we will be back LTing yesterday (on what will have been Thursday). There are big all camp events which seem likely to take place in the very near future and then another big week in the lead up to Visiting Day.

More From The Week

Ultra Leagues + Intercamps!

The past week has been filled with thrilling Intercamps and Ultra League games, showcasing the talent, teamwork, and sportsmanship of our campers. From flag football to soccer, basketball, tennis, and baseball, our campers have truly shone in every event, bringing home both victories and unforgettable memories.

One of the most exciting highlights was the 9th-grade boys’ flag football game at Camp Timberlake in the Mohican Bowl. Our team triumphed in a nail-biting overtime win. The journey to victory was intense, with a tough semi-final game setting the stage for the thrilling finale.

Our 3rd and 4th-grade girls had a fantastic time at the soccer tournament hosted by Scatico. The young athletes had loads of fun, enjoying the friendly competition and the opportunity to bond with players from other camps. Similarly, the 3rd and 4th-grade boys put on a remarkable show in their soccer match at Camp Timberlake.

The 10th-grade boys participated in the prestigious Nat Holman basketball tournament at Camp Scatico. They showcased their talent with a convincing win against Berkshire Hills in the first game. Although they faced a tough loss against Camp Wah-Nee, their effort and determination were commendable. In the 8th-grade co-ed tennis tournament at Camp Scatico, two of our senior campers made it to the championship match. Despite a close 5-6 loss, their performance was outstanding, earning them a well-deserved second place. Lastly, our 5th and 6th-grade baseball team had an impressive home game against Greylock

In Ultra League news: Upper Camp was the Purple Reign win over Green Elite. The upper boys all netted in a fantastic team effort. On the hardwood, the Black Samurai continued their unbeaten run led by some of the Waiters. The Orange team had a valiant comeback from 18 down to close the margin to 2.

Middle camp played the first match of the gridiron flag football series ending in a 7-7 tie and there were stellar defensive plays from both teams.  Junior camp’s slate featured some thrilling basketball between the Sky Blue and Lime Green teams. It was a close match but Sky Blue pulled away for the win.

This week has been a testament to the spirit of Camp Schodack, where our campers not only display remarkable athleticism but also build friendships and create lasting memories. We’re incredibly proud of all our campers and look forward to more exciting games ahead.

Wettest Day Ever, Trip Day, and Activity Highlights!

Summer simply isn’t complete without our annual Wettest Day Ever! Slides as tall as our climbing tower, the return of The Kona Ice Truck, and a pool party to rival the likes of Blister Day.

Speaking of– we had our first blister day of the season! You know it is officially July when all of camp is gathered around the new pool alongside a buddy, music blasting and canteen time feeling like the perfect cool-down from the sun. Hot afternoons singeing into breathtaking sunsets and then a brilliantly clear night sky. Up at Coral Hill or atop zipline is where you really get to take in the forest green that frames our little pocket of the 12123. The warm weather has been a big mood booster all around. That and the hot fudge sundaes being served up in the camper kitchen every Camper Choice period!

This week for trip day, Junior and Middle Camp had a personal tour of Howe Caverns, a natural underground cave. Aboard a boat, they rode through an underground lake and even got to see a 100 foot waterfall! Afterwards, they hit up Lickity Split Ice Cream for a sweet treat ahead of movie night in the Rec Hall. Upper Camp hit the lanes for an afternoon of bowling and followed things up with a trip to the movies. They had the choice between Despicable Me 4, Inside Out 2, or a Quiet Place!
Our Adventure crew went rafting at Deerfield River and had their first off-camp overnight trip at Lake Shaftesbury in Vermont. An afternoon of swimming, tacos in a bag, and s’mores to cap off the night. Over on the tennis court, our Camper Counselor Tournament has been raging on. With 20 teams between Junior and Middle Camp, the tournament has been a big topic around camp. There are still updates to come as the tournament continues. Winners are expected to be announced in The Scoop very soon!
